Just a geeky point of clarification:

You can't really rely on old photos to accurately determine belt direction. Old tintype or ferrotype photography produced prints that were mirror images of reality. So what looks like a belt with the excess on the right side would in reality have the excess on the left.

There's a famous picture of Billy The Kid that shows him wearing his pistol on his left hip that has given rise to myth that he was left handed. He was not. That is a tintype photo. If you look at his buttons on his clothes you can easily tell the photo was reversed. Billy was right handed.

With my clan crest buckle, I hold the buckle in my left hand and the free end in my right and my belt ends up being right-side-up. I guess those guys at the CCC understand that most people are right handed when they put my buckle together.

Even with civilian clothes, I find myself checking my "gig line".
You can't beat that military training for inprinting things in your brain
Even though its been 36 years since I got out of the Army, I always check my gig line and still don't feel comfortable with my shirt tail out.

My plate buckle is made to buckle on thje right side so
tend to put on my regular buckle kilt belt the same way.

I noticed that if I put my belt on in the same direction as I wrap the kilt the the belt doesn't pull on the kilt and make the front apron bunch up

I'm a lefty too, but the loose end of my belt is always on the left.
