Sporran belt inside or outside kilt belt?

    Hallo,

I recently started wearing a tartan kilt with sporran and a 2" leather belt -- but I'm confused as to whether the sporran belt should be put on first, so it's inside the kilt belt and hidden by it, or do I put the kilt belt on first, so the sporran belt sits outside it?

I guess the sporran belt goes on last, since that's easier to achieve, and there's no buckle hidden under the kilt belt -- but putting the sporran belt on last hides the elegant kilt belt!

    What's the story?

    thanks.

Hello Jock, welcome to the forum.

The sporran belt is generally worn over the kilt belt. I wear mine so that the sporran belt at the back is just over the top of the kilt belt and as it comes round to the front it crosses over the kilt belt so that the sporran is well below the belt.

If the hands are crossed in front of the kilt with arms hanging down - that is about the right position for the sporran itself.

But - whatever is comfortable, cos comfort is what a kilt is all about!

With the sporran on top it is easier to move to the side when visiting the Gents.

It's sporran chain underneath the belt for me.
I find the sporran hangs better, but that's just me.

    Whatever suits you!

I wear my belt first and my sporran bel usually goes on top of my belt.

    Jock,

    Welcome!

I have tried it both ways, and I find it more comfortable for me if it over the belt, but like Graham says it is all about comfort, so you must experiment for yourself and find out the best for you.

The advantage of wearing the sporran strap over the belt is you can more easily shift the sporran off to the side while dancing or running.

I wear mine over but i wear it through the belt loops to keep it from moving around to much. I wish i still had "belt keepers" we used them in the military and police use them to keep the pistol belts looped to the regular belts I would use them to keep the sporran belt tied to the kilt belt.

Wow! I'd never even considered not using the kilt's belt loops to hold the sporran belt -- I think I'd be afraid of losing it off my hips!
