What happened to the idea of a boat cruise?
I was going to mention that too. The cruise wasn't really "in the works" but the idea was thrown around.

Washington would be the best city for me. It's close to me and I wouldn't have to make any special travel arrangements. Anywhere else, I would have to see how it would fit in with my vacation plans. If I can combine it with a planned vacation, I'm there.

I cast my vote for Austin, Texas. The city is pretty open minded, and we have a choice of several Celtic pubs to go to.

First you have to attend the get together at the Tilted Kilt in Houston, Texas on Jan 10, 2008 so we can discuss it in further detail...LOL.

I voted Vancouver as it would be the only option available to me. When I tried to get a Visa to visit USA on holiday in 1987 I was refused as I had been in East Germany for a time in 1972 as a student. I know the Cold War is supposed to be over but I suspect terrorist activities in recent years have made the US homeland security even more choosy about who they would allow to visit, so joining an x-marks gethering in any US city would be ruled out for me. I have been to Vancouver when I was younger and could go there again, though realistically it may be too far for my wife to travel. Since she suffered a stroke in 1999 we have restricted our travels to northern europe though we are planning a trip to Gran Canaria for our next wedding anniversary which is a four hour flight so if that goes OK a return to Canada could just be back on the agenda.
Edited to add:- Must have missed spotting the Toronto option. That would be more viable for me as its a much shorter trip than Vancouver.

    XMTS gathering

How about Denver? It is an air hub, the surrounding area is more like the highlands than Washington D.C. There is an annual gathering and Tattoo in Estes park, the town itself sports quite a bit of everything for the kilted to do from theater, to pubs, to shopping, to whatever. That's my two cents. Though LV sounds pretty good and alternating years on one side of the pond or other is also inviting!

Never mind. This was too much of a hijack so I broke it out into it's own thread.

I cannot believe that any of us "real" kilt addicts would spend money on travel rather than on more kilts....?

And...I'm for invading a kilt resistant city rather than being welcomed by a kilt friendly city.

Imagine a legion of kilted rable strolling down the main streets of a small town unfamiliar or resistant to kilts....

And here I sit with one vote and absolutely no idea how to cast it....guess I can wait for the results and go from there.

I voted for Washington DC, Why your wondering I looked at the facts. Yes there is a Int'l airport, shopping, the sightseeing. But there is one this that was missed, access to kilt shops. Rocky's shop is only 3 hours away. There is one kilt shop in Manassas which is 45 mins south of the city.

    Semper Fi,

The scottish shop in Alexandria is definitely a mixed bag. It's oddly enough a combination of scotish clothing / accessories and a tobacco shop.

The problem is that it doesn't seem to be a very good tobacco shop. It's doesn't smell of fine cigars and pipe tobaccos - it reeks of stale cigarettes. I'd be a bit worried about buying a kilt or jacket there and getting the smell out. Now don't get me wrong folks - I smoke - but good grief that shop absolutly REEKS. The building is most likely well over 200 years old and hasn't been aired out since it was built.

They do indeed have a good selection however and The Kilted Nation is well worth a visit if for no other reason than to support a new contemporary kilt store in a very unlikely location.
