Thank you all for the suggestions. I hoped that there might be something foolproof -- for example, wield a bottle of whiskey to club'm like a baby seal, and when he regains consciousness, he'll be ready -- but maybe the talky/social method would be best, even though it's not really my idiom.
Perhaps it would help to say that the guy in question looked to be retirement age. Courage has had plenty of time to manifest itself in him already, so maybe nothing will make it happen.

Joyfully tell him that life is too short not to wear a kilt once. Once you wear a kilt, you'll do it again. It's all about taking the first step.

Ask any combat veteran, courage stems from fear. If you are not afraid you can not be courageous.
"Courage": The state or quality of mind or spirit that allows one to face danger with self-possession, confidence, and resolution.

Interesting question. I never thought that it took any courage to wear the kilt.
Self esteem? - Yes. Pride? - Yes. Desire to be comfortable? - Yes.
Courage? - I don't see that.

Kind of reminds me of a conversation I had with a coworker of mine yesterday. I think people get too hung up on what is "cool".
"Hey man, I just gotta say, that kilt.. bada**."
"Why thank you, you know, for a good price, you could have one of your own, and I bet you'd never wear pants again."
"Yeah, but I'm only a little bit Irish, and not any Scottish at all."
"I'm predominantly Danish, and only about a quarter Scottish. You don't have to be of any race to wear one.(I told him about one of the Scottish lairds who is Indian, and wears a kilt.)"
"Well, I got into a lot of fights already for wearing tight pants in school."
"Wouldn't you rather get into a fight for wearing a kilt?"
"Well, yeah..."
Convert
"Lads, we're outnumbered, surrounded, and will all likely die tomorrow, but I have good news!"
"I just found a bunch of whiskey in the castle cellar!"

A guy in one of my classes said "I wish I could wear a kilt" to which I replied "who's stopping you?"
And it wasn't that long ago that I thought I couldn't get away with wearing a kilt. It wasn't so much that I was afraid of being weird and different, but more that I was concerned about the potential impact it might have on my social life, particularly with the female types. Then I realized that I could wear a tutu and it couldn't make things much worse, so I said screw it and got a kilt. It was only after I started wearing the kilt that I learned that it improved the social life.
