There I got that out of the way. That's kind of scary that this thread keeps coming up for you Tommie, but I think that it also shows that you have been searching X Marks a lot, LOL! Now stop it Tommie! You'll wake up the Gods...
* I'll attach one more thing here. I grew up in Northern New Mexico for those first twelve years. Those kilts you've seen and that, RiverKilt, is talking about have influanced my tastes in kilts. I keep feeling that I don't quite follow the norm as to what a "Real" kilt is supposed to look like.

I myself grew up with Navajo kids in Dallas, TX and the Scots/Navajo connection is pretty strong. I'll bet that it would not offend (that tribe) if I had some Navajo regailia. It would be about the same as clan tartans, just show some respect. So long as I did not claim to be a "insert tribe name." Lotsa fake "Native Americans" out there.

Oops, Sir Robert , I had just removed the part of a post that explained my connections to the Zuni and Dine' tribes because I didn't think it was very important. Just to cover my backside, I am not in any way that I know, genetticly related to anyone in an american tribe. That being said, I do have connections to both those tribes. Hope that clears up anything.

Aye Robert,
Similarities Between Navajo Culture and Scottish Culture
Navajo Nation 26,100 square miles – Scotland 30,414 square miles Navajo Nation population 165,00 – Scotland 5,000,000 Both cultures use a clan system Both cultures were conquered and pillaged Both cultures had their language banned Both cultures had their traditional way of dress banned Both cultures had their traditional spiritual ceremonies banned Both cultures were removed far from their homelands Both cultures raised sheep, spun wool and wove blankets and wool cloth Figure that's enough similarity for a district tartan....don't know about creating things like Begay, Yazzie, and Tsinniginnie clan tartans for names. Maybe better for creating tartans for the Navajo clans like the Bitter Water, Towering House, Tobacco clans etc.
One common custom that's commonly seen is t-shirts made up to celebrate family or clan reunions. Certainly seems to set the mood for developing a tartan for that group.
But again, presumptious of a Bilagaana to do so.

Thanks Ron for posting all the good information. Probably best for the Dine' weavers to work that all out.

Thought this thread was about done but it popped back up.
One last note.
My wife took a look at the two patterns I posted at the start of this thread, and made the comment that she thought it would look to much like a skirt rather than a kilt.
Trying to visualise it in my mind,I sorta think she might be right.
Oh well.Back to the drawing board.

Looking at all the material and garments on this thread made me realize just how much I like the colors. The native colors, especially the Buffalo Dancer's kilts, are really superb. I've always liked native designs and when I see them juxtaposed against tartans I see how similar in concept they are. I think any Native American design would work well for a kilt considering the wide variety that exists already. I have to admit that I really like the Aztec Casual.

would probably have a little more luck with contacting weavers in Zuni land , but I don't know that the concept would be... accepted or welcomed. In fact, I'm going to leave that one alone. You're up there in the right area, and this is the kind of thing that should be face to face. You might see who you can get in touch with up there.
