actually I ask about the rise not due to height but because it was generally the fashion of early kilts to come up higher over the torso than they do today. I was just curious if the original version followed this style/trend.

Hopefully, not far off topic.

Just like Ike jackets and War II battlejackets go well with kilts so do replica Civil War shell jackets from both sides.

This is an old picture with a solid kilt, rather than a tartan kilt, but it shows a replica Confederate Richmond Shell jacket with my black Utilikilts Workman's. A good pic of the jacket itself though.



I also have a replica Confederate Trans-western jacket in brown and a Union cavalry jacket in blue but with the high collar and a lot of gold trim that makes it a tad "Michal Jacksonie"

But will experiment with them with some tartan kilts. My replicas came from Grand Illusions, but the owners retired a few years ago. There are still many sources for replica Civil War jackets.

A regular feature of the Long's Peak Highland Games at Estes Park, CO, is a re-enactment group of the 79th NY Cameron Highlanders. I went to the games two years in a row earlier in the decade. Although I seem to recall that most were wearing the Black Stewart tartan, they were also wearing very good-looking and well made replica tunics. I got the email address of the maker from one of them, but lost it, unfortunately.

I have me great great great grandpappy's thistle lapel pins. I wear one on my kilts.
