I have a kilt made by Stewart Rendall and can definately recommend him. It is Gunn Weathered 16oz and wearing it is amazing! Having seen my mother sew quilts by hand, I can tell you the hand stitching on my kilt is phenomenal. Stewart was great to work with and communicated with me frequently while he was making my kilt.

Thanks for starting this thread and thanks to everyone who replied. When I get to Scotland (next year or the following) I would like to get a new kilt made and wondered who to choose. Although no one has said there is a definitive maker (as if!) there are some real choices now. Grand to hear that so many makers can earn a living making beautiful wearable art.

    Cheers Archie!
Glad you're enjoying wearing it. It's always nice to hear back from a satisfied customer.

You might consider ordering the kilt ahead of time and having it ready for you when you get to Scotland. This would allow any last minute adjustments to be made, avoid shipping cost and potentially avoid customs.

    Thanks for all the replys

Thanks to you all for your swift replies, this site has so much info that it has made the learning curve less of a steep one.

I was speaking to a few people from around the area and they recommend McCall’s http://www.mccallsltd.com/

I wonder if any of you had any opinion, I have visited a few in Aberdeen now and McCall’s was the most impressive

    Thanks again

    Ben

I don't doubt their quality Ben but they appear to be on the pricier side.

But having them on your doorstep could be an advantage over travelling elsewhere which would eat up some of the difference or having to deal remotely with a supplier elsewhere. It is also giving support to a local business.

I'd strongly echo the sentiments above that you should visit a kiltmaker in person and let them measure you. See the tartan swatches in daylight, and support local kiltmaker businesses.

I know of two main kilt shops in Aberdeen itself:
    • Alex Scott as others above have mentioned (corner of Back Wynd and Schoolhill)
    • McCalls Highland Wear at 11 Bridge Street (highland wear dept on the top floor)

I visited both before settling on Scotts for my first kilt. Scott's kilt dept is on an upper floor. Work your way though the shop and up all the stairs at the front, then up the stairs at the back (the route up is signed). Their head kiltmaker is called Margot Brodie - meet her if you can and above all, enjoy the experience of acquiring your first kilt.

    best regards
