I've seen a few pipers who can get plaids donned solo and still look presentable - but they seem to be in the minority.
I'm not terribly fond of them or feather bonnets. It's just too warm most of the year here to justify the extra trouble & discomfort.
Slainte,
steve
I've never played with a feather bonnet, but I can't imagine that they'd be too comfortable. I can't imagine wearing a doublet AND plaid in the summer! I'd die, pretty much. And Lawyer is right, I have to put it on at home because I can't put on the plaid by myself. If I was in jeans and a t-shirt, I might be able to put it on myself, but not in a military kilt and doublet!
