    Since the powder horn and pistols are listed, I would bet that the "bottle" refers to a leather object used for carrying shot and ball for one's firearms, like these.

    I aim to please ! I just couldn't think of a way of attaching a whisky bottle to one's other accoutrements!
    Another thought: since he seems to be describing a field - or even a military - get-up, the "bottle" may mean a canteen, which the Brits refer to as "water bottles"....

    They used to carry their bottles on their hip. Nowadays, it's the left hand (so the right is free to salute).
