We wore clam diggers as kids all summer long. They were great beach wear in a place as cool if not downright cold as Vancouver in the summer. I'm quite nostalgic about them, but I doubt I'd wear them all the same.

    Hijack warning!!!!!!!!!!

Plus Twos and Plus Fours - usually found on the golf course - pants extending 2 and 4 inches below the knee.

Breeks - Traditionally worn by hunters and beaters - also extending below the knee. Usually tweed, corduroy, or moleskin.

I maintain that golfers and shooters wear the same bifurcated garment, whatever it is called, and that they are not capris. I actually found the term breeks when I was looking at shooting jackets on UK websites last year. They came in plus twos and plus fours, refering to the length of the legs in inches past the knee. I didn't get a shooting jacket, but I did get a nice Harris Tweed sport jacket (trouser length). It is going to be hard for me to resist the Kilt Shooting Jacket from STA and Kevin Kinney, but I am sure my wife will help boost my resistance.

As for how I call it, long shorts are still shorts as long as they're loose about the leg like a wide leg or straight leg trouser . They can go a little ways below the knee.... but pretty much look silly. Men's capris are tighter about the leg and only look good on young Italian men on scooters. In Italy.

I'm all for my men wearing trousers, kilts and maybe the occasional just above the knee short*. Leave the length adventures to us women.

*If you are as cool as Payne, you can wear knickers/breeks/plustwos or fours. Only on the course though.

I believe these are the "capri pants" referred to in the Chicago Tribune article.

There are more photos of the gals. You decide.

Those aren't so bad (the black ones). I don't think I'd wear them, but to me capris are generally a little longer. Maybe my time in Europa has inured me to them. Still, the mid-calf length bothers me, but hey I don't have to wear them!

The other guy is wearing cargo shorts, or?

A cousin of mine, he's the same age as me, only will wear the long shorts or short pants. Just roll your pants up to your knees and go barefoot like a country boy.
Who cares. Some people might look good in capris, other's not.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
