No Pants In DC
I just got back from a quick trip to DC. Flew Tues, meeting on Wed, flew home Thurs. The only pants on the trip were my uniform for the meeting. Made the flight wearing the kilt, visited with friends Tuesday night and then met up with a cousin I haven't seen in years (he and his brother have kilts from his brother's wedding) for Wed night. Flew home kilted.
Still a bit new to being kilted in public, but it went well (and I didn't leave myself any options for backing out). Actually, as some of you have already said, it was almost dissapointing how oblivious most people were to it. The only comments were one guy started whistling "Scotland the Brave" as I was washing my hands in the airport men's room, and one of the (very nice looking) ticket agents told me I looked dashing, which led to the discussion about which tartan it was, etc. But that was it. Even the people I sat next to on each flight didn't mention anything (and I had to get two of them out of their seats since I had the window seat).
I found going through security was easier since all my stuff was all in my sporran, not in 5 different pockets, but getting a good pleat sweep trying to fold my 6'-3" frame into the window seat was next to impossible. However, even after sitting on the big wad of pleats for 5 hours, they hung beautifully (heavyweight wool).
This is starting to get way to easy to do. I don't know what you guys are doing to me......

Your addiction is coming along nicely!!
Yep, airplane seats are a challenge. Sometimes after you sweep as best as you can and sit down, you can discretely tug the lower hem edge of each pleat to straighten them out. ("Discrete" being the difficult part!!)

What can I say, airplane seats and larger men don't go together! Just sweep as best as you can and don't worry about it. That's why I always a UK when I fly.

Hmm. I've yet to fly in a kilt. This seems an interesting issue.

I had no problem flying whilst wearing a USAK Casual. I was very, very comfortable.

And I didn't know there was room to fly IN a kilt. Now a fly could be IN a kilt, or do they make them that small? And I didn't know YOU could fly. I better quit now.
DALE.
You don't have to be Scottish to be comfortable!

Ditto the joys of flying in a USAK Casual. The Perma-Pleat and the velcro and the sporran mean that I just unstrap my sporran at security and hand it over, a quick sweep when I take my seat and a bit of rump shake when I stand up. Far easier than the hassle of pants, and, of course, also vastly more comfortable.

Travel is very easy in kilts and much more confortable. I usually travel w/ a couple kilts and a pair of board shorts. The kilts are for wearing and the boardshorts are for swimming, sports, and runs to the ice machine. I have only had a few metal detectors go off because of buckles. If they do then it's good to have practiced the security gymnastics that you have to go through to get thoroughly wanded down. If I don't want the hassle I wear my travel kilts that are sans buckle. I did get caught by security on the way back, as I had a sweater on and couldn't see that I had left my belt on. After that it was smooth sailing.
