At Carnegie Mellon, you can major in bagpiping! So, he probably saw a lot a pipers in kilts in college.

Indeed, the university does have a major in piping, and a student-run pipe band. I awoke many blurry mornings to the sound of a lone piper practising.

In the small world category, World Champion James McIntosh founded the piping program.
Turns out Margaret McConnell of Highland Heritage, where I got my first kilt, was Jimmy's sponsor to get his visa!
