It's amazing even what reaction one can apparently get when women get wind that you've even ordered a kilt; I'll cite my own experience(s) as examples: Simply put, I don't own a kilt yet, but have a Law Enforcement tartan kilt on order, in addition to possibly getting an Isle of Skye tartan one locally, and I'm eyeing a Dress Gordon one locally as well. Anyways, when female friends of mine heard that this is happening, the compliments and constant questions of , "Oh, you'll look great...", "Has it arrived yet?" or "When can I see you in it?" have already begun in earnest.
Ah, the future looks good. Kilted, of course.

Hi,
An observation from the Northern Panhandle: a huge percentage of the population of West Virginia is Scots, Scots Irish, Irish and Welsh. It has been my experience that not only will you not get any grief, but rather many people will approach you to talk of their Celtic heritage, enquire as to your tartan, and offer to buy you a round. As for the ladies, well, you will be the center of their attention.
I frequently wear my kilt in small towns and have never had any problem; wear your's with pride.
In theory there is no difference between theory and practice but in practice there is.

<chuckle> I was about to point that out! Much of the back country from there to here (SC) was settled by Scots and their descendents.

Sometimes when I listen to my Fred Morrison reelpipe CDs, I can't help but hear/see a fiddle in m'heid. So much bluegrass and early country music is undeniably Celtic at its roots.

I can't decide if he is really that afraid of some of the smucks in our little town or if he is afraid of being seen with a guy in a dress lol. I do not think I'll have a problem here, but you never know. I'm looking forward to my first outing, but as it stands now it will not be with my best friend.
I live in a similar area to you and get looks all the time, I have decided not the let the Red necks run my life or my choices.
so chose freedom and enjoy the Rabbit hole

You asked a guy with no experience. Pay attention to the feedback on the board.
For me, I get my best thumbs up from "tough guys." Think they respect cajones.
When you get your first kit take your "friend" to the closest shopping mall and tell him to walk about 15 or 20 paces behind you and observe the reactions of women. He'll soon beg you to tell him how to get one for himself.
And two kilties together double the power of the "babe magnet."
