Ok, I found Beau Ties Ltd. of Vermont.
They have a lot of bow ties under fifty dollars. It will take a while to sort through all the options.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Jamie...you've inspired me. I went to Target today and found the brown vest and a nice navy blue. Unfortunately, they were not down to $5 yet, but I did grab the navy blue for about $12.50. I have nothing to wear it with now, but look at it as an investment (and an excuse) for future kilts. Over the next few weeks, I'm going to keep my eyes open for the brown at a cheaper price. If I find it at about $5, I'll grab that one as well.

Phil,
You are not allowed to post something like that without further explanation!
If you have the know how could you do a step by step DIY thread with photos? I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be interested.
Cheers

Or keep a sharp eye on eBay. I got a great Carrot and Gibbs bow for £0.99. I've been thinking about making my own, then I can get the pointed thistle shape you see in the 30s and 40s, but I don't know where to get just enough silk for one tie in a particular pattern.

Yes! I too am gilty of being interested in this. Though there are instructions on the web, they are difficult to understand.

Actually cutting out the fabric doesn't seem like it would be too difficult, but it would involve some fairly detailed sewing. Just use an existing tie for the template.
I've actually been thinking about this for some tartan strips I have remaining from a kilt.
