Works great
Nick,
The tartan builder worked great for me. I was able to get the color blends that I wanted, and the line placing looks great. The only thing is the thread count. Personally, I'm not sure what the thread count would look like on an actual kilt. Based on the picture, it looks right, but how does it translate into the width of each stripe? Also, now that I have a pattern, will there be website support for registering the pattern? Overall, its the best builder I've seen. Thanks.

The good thing is in the future (Microsoft says next generation) IE will be compliant to the current standards.

Nick,
I have already designed two tartans! So, what will the minimums be? Yardage and cost..any ideas yet?
Cheers!

That claim was proven false when they broke the standard compliance by requiring websites to tell IE to run in standards mode, FYI

Nick - found a possible bug. Got to a point where I was told I had too many colors, deleted one and still told too many colors when I tried to add one more. Deleted all and told too many colors, even though there were no colors up!!! Using Mozilla Firefox 3.0.5 if that is any help.
Backed out and went back in and was able to successfully design a tartan for the 300th anniversary of the City of New Bern in 2010. Now to convince the Councilors they should get behind it!

This is a great app. Thanks for the foresight to add this to your website.
I could waste (or spend) a lot of time on this!

This project is still a work in progress. You should see help with your stripe-widths question within a few days. And within a few months we're hoping to have an even cooler update... watch this space.
As for official registration, as you may (or may not) know I'm both on the STA board of governors and on the steering group for the new official Scottish national Register of Tartans. So we're in a good position to help. But on the other hand, I'm deeply aware of the need to help protect these bodies from a flood of frivolous registrations (not saying this would apply to yours!). So I'm working closely with them to develop a process that's both helpful and fair to all involved, for example strongly directing people towards paying for an expert review before applying for recording. We'll refine the nuts and bolts of this as we go along, but the short answer is yes there will be a process that should end up costing far less for a better and more involved result than the way most people have tartans designed at the moment (which is commissioning a company or independent expert to design and weave).

We're hoping that purchasing will be available within a week or two. There will have to be a small surcharge above our current Special Weave fabrics to cover the extra work both at our end and for the weavers. But otherwise the terms will be the same, with a 4 meter minimum (i.e. about a kilt length) and an 8-10 week delivery time.
