I would locate a military surplus store, they seem to be everywhere, get some good used military issued boots at a very reasonable price. I bought some recently for a veterans function and I plan to wear them with my kilt also.

The best combat boots (if you don't need waterproof boots) is the Corcoran 10" Marauder! I've been wearing these since I got out of basic. I've got two pair, one in black and one in suede. Very comfortable, lightweight, plenty of support, and keeps you feet cool.

I still wear a pair of Corcoran Original Jump Boots I bought in...wow, was it that long ago? ... 1981.
Man, I'm gettin' old.
Buff 'em up with Lincoln Black Wax...that smell really takes me back.

The last time I looked...

I'm finding lot of black leather GI-style combat boots for $40-$50. That would fit the bill nicely. Problem is, I'm just 5-8. I'm concerned the classic 10" combat boot will go too far up my leg and my hose will get lost.
The only 8" boots I'm seeing are a combination of leather and canvas/nylon, and I'd really prefer leather. I just think they look cooler.
Questions:
1) Am I wrong about the boots? Should I even be worried about hose?
2) Does anyone know of a website with black leather 8" boots? Google isn't as helpful as I might like.
For a really good selection of Combat Boots, check out US Cavalry... Maybe they've gone down-hill in the last 15 years; but, the last time I checked most of their catalog was devoted to combat boots of every description: I can't imagine your not finding something to fit the bill from them.
Good Luck!

Have a look here to see if anything fits the bill for you:

Also check Doc Martens USA store:

For reference, when I wear a higher boot I do not worry about going to the knee with hose. Usually just scrunch the hose at the top of the boot or wear appropriate socks for the boot height.

I personally like the 5.11 Tactical boots. I bought a pair of zippered ones to wear for EMS calls, and forgot that they were only for EMS............I wear them all the time. Lightweight and comfortable. A little pricey, but once you wear them you won't mind the cost.

Corcoran Jump Boots
Yeah for corcoran! I've still got (and even occasionally wear) the only pair I ever bought... 1977, I was stationed at Andrews AFB, MD, and bought them at the Cameron Station, VA PX... Nearly $100 then.
Sadly, they just don't seem to be what they were then... I did hear that they got bought by another boot company, though.
