Thanks cessna, for your reply
I'm not as sad about not making it now, then I was before. And to make it up to not being able to go to the Gathering I will try to convince my family to go to Scotland one more time (you just cant get enough of Scotland ) and drive across the Highlands and visit atleast one Highland Games/Gathering (though it wouldn't be in the near future because of the economy here and all that, but then I just have something to look forward to! )

Ok, I've chilled! I do thank everyone for your different perspectives without making me out to be an ogre. You are right, the articles that I have read from Scotland are rather cynical and I can see why to an extent. I suppose masses of tourists do make everyday life a hassle at times. But that article was just so off putting. I dunno, just made me feel unwanted.
I'm still looking forward to doing all this festival stuff. It'll be a change from the hill walking we usually do. And I'll wave to you cessna as I drive thru Hawick.

I live in the suburbs of Washington, DC and we experience the same problems as expressed elsewhere for Edinburgh and Scotland. We get Mr and Mrs Smith from Podunk, Middle America (where I grew up) as well as tourists from every country in the world. You learn to live with it though you may not like it. And, I must admit, most of them are pretty nice folks for the most part, though they unintentially and often unknowingly create problems for the locals, so the Scots have my sympathy - especially when I'm playing tourist in their neighborhood.

a certain ex-Scottish Government have caused the main problems in Edinburgh. It's also ashame that tourists will have to see the city's streets ripped to shreads

By the way - could anyone clarify if they are taking a wife/husband or partner to the meetings?
I'd feel bad if I didn't drag my girlfriend along as I'm sure she'd enjoy talking to a whole range of people from all over the world (although I'm sure she's sick of hearing about kilts - my fault!)

Paul,
Bring her. My wife will be tagging along at the pub meetings, though I'm not sure about the Talisker tent on Saturday, and I suspect there will be other significant others as well. In fact, I'd be surprised if they didn't.
