I used to enjoy throwing small pebbles into the air and watching bats "dive bomb" them. I hadn't even thought about that in I don't know how many years. Thanks for the reminder.

One of my cats sometimes likes for me to toss pebbles for him to chase and pounce on at night. I throw them so that their sound moves like a bug hopping along. He seems to be quite aware that I am tossing the pebble or stick, but he acts like he is really stalking a bug.

Point taken, but don't garter snakes also eat bugs?

Aye, but I have yet to see a winged garter snake take to the sky after all those flying pests

True-- and quite frankly if they did, I'd have to put them on the hate list as well. The theme here is that I hate things that fly above my head or in my face, especially if it is in a spastic motion (i.e. moths)

It's been raining on and off for the last few days here; guess it's a couple of monts late. The bats are probably enjoying it though.

We have several fruitless mulberry's where during the summer we get a couple of family units of bats. Mostly Mexican Free-tails, but occasionally other kinds. All summer long we enjoy them putting on their aerial ballet, and listen to them "talk". Bats are just too cool.

It's really fun when Mama is teach the babies how to hunt, boy you talk about aerobatics! We'll see them for another couple of weeks then they will be headed back south. Neat stuff!ith:

Then I'd add owls, upon take-off from the ground anyways
They really are spastic flyers when flapping/lifting-off
I had one sitting in our alley one night nearly fly into our car as I came around the corner.

hmm , and just now recall one a few years ago that came gliding across the road late one night & almost took me off my Harley!!

I did finally hear the bats. It's a very high pitch sound (most of it probably beyond what I can hear), and fairly quiet. There's lots of crickets out there, and they are louder than the bats.

Yeah, its funny, I have a wee bit of hearing loss from my days in a hard rock / metal band, but I can always pick up on when a bat is near.
