There's a learn to knit kilt hose group on the DIY forum. I signed up and thought better before I even before I started. I'm hoping Scooby can knit me some hose someday, afterall, I have made him two kilts(so far). I'm hinting at some traditional garter ties to start him off easy.

Interestingly, his mother convinced him to take up knitting to calm his mind and body; one of the things she used to get him in the groove at the start was the fact that in days of old knitting was income producing and therefore men's work, it's only recently that its perception has changed.

Yes you can get a number of different "looks" with the same kilt by switching up the footwear.

With my Drummond of Perth (muted) kilt I wear charcoal grey, mid-grey, black, burgundy, and matching tartan hose. (I have white hose but they are currently a "fashion faux pas" for pipers around here.)

I have normal ghillies, and buckled shoes.

To my eye, the "piper socks" with the bulky "bobble top" turnovers (which I have in charcoal, mid-grey, and white) look best with ghillies, while hose in more formal deep shades with ordinary plain-knit turnovers (which I have in black, burgundy, and tartan) look best with the buckled shoes.

I have flashes in black, muted red, white, and olive green.

Black hose with white flashes and buckled shoes gives an extremely formal look.

I have around 8 pairs of solid colour 4-ply hose, 1 pair of Argyll-cuffed hose, 1 pair of diced hose, 1 pair of very thick & comfortable special knit hose.
They're all enough to dress for every occasion - although I'm hoping to get more Argyll hose to match a few different kilts.
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.
