Yes...we consider socks worn with sandal one of the seven warning signs of the impending apocalypse around here...

Ok thanks guys! I'll go ahead and get a pair of hose ( probably charcoal, gray or tan) to wear with my normal shoes when wearing my kilt. I think I'm going to attempt to make red flashes instead of buying Hash House tartan ones. Does anyone have instructions that would be easy to follow? Once again thanks guys for steering me clear of the sandals/flashes disaster.

Yep, that makes two avid hikers in the immediate vicinity. Obviously its time to put together another kilted-hike-and-pub-crawl weekend.

You can use a length of elastic. Sew the ends together, stitch on a couple of pieces of fabric to make the "flash" part, and you're set. They're also made with a clasp mechanism. The simplest option is to call the Tartans Museum and order a pair of them. On the other hand, if you're wanting them for hiking and other non-formal, non-traditional kilt-wearing, what if you took two pieces of camo fabric about 40 inches long and an inch wide and used them to tie up your hose? That would be an interesting, DIY sort of look.

I made a mistake as to my kilts tartan. I originally said it was Hash House Hunting, but it is actually Hash House Harriers Trail tartan. But getting on with my point. Above is the kilt, and below are the Sport Kilt hose I was thinking...

"Define "muddy" and "good kilt hose"
I guess I meant hose that are more than say $50. I have done a fair bit of hiking in my life and I never seem to find a trail that at some point doesn't get muddy or wet. For example I hiked the AT from Fontana Dam to Davenport Gap (the length of the AT through Great Smoky Mountain National Park) and for 4 days straight it never stopped raining. Wonderful time however when I got home those socks were ruined, due to all the mud and grime. I would feel bad ruining Kilt hose that I had paid a hefty price tag for.
BTW a kilted hike/pub crawl/ etc sounds like a heaping helping of awesome!

In that case I would definitely go with striped rugby socks! Blue/red, yellow/red or yellow/blue:

also, remember that 15NZD is only about 10 USD.

I just ordered some rugby socks for hiking from World Rugby Shop. They haven't come in yet so I can't give my opinion, but they look good.

They have several different style and colors from plain to candy-cane striped for $6-$14. At that price I wouldn't feel bad if they got a little trail abuse.
