Another John here. I'm with English Bloke - the social websites like Facebook, MySpace, etc. is just too much for me. I just don't want everyone to know my 'business'. I know there are privacy settings, etc., but I also don't like being tied to having to update something, or keeping tabs on other people's pages just to find out what's going on with them.
I didn't get a cell phone until 2001 (and that was only for emergencies when I became Scoutmaster). I seldom use it, and I don't have a model that does anything fancy - it's just a phone. No texting, not internet, no camera - just a PHONE. I don't keep a journal/diary either.
I'm an intensely private person, and in general very shy. (I realize I've shared some personal things on here, but this is a unique situation - it's relatively anonymous - and I keep personally identifying info out as much as possible. If we were face-to-face, I would not have shared as much. In fact, I'd probably be on the fringe, watching and listening more than I do here.)
It's OK with me if other folks want to participate in them. I just don't want to be hectored into joining something simply because "everyone's doing it", and I don't want to be required to join just to see 'updates' that people send me from time to time.
John

John & John, I think it's good that we have different opinions and preferences. I really respect that people dislike, and don't want to be a part of, all the new social platforms. These platforms definitely has it's pros and cons.
I see the different social platforms as an oportunity to promote something that is a great passion for me, the kilt and Scottish culture. I enjoy this forum, but we who are here at Xmarks are already addicted. On Facebook and on Google+ I can spread the word. Hey, I even have my own websites dedicated to the kilts and tartans.

As networks go, it doesn't sound very social to me.

It's still a "closed" field trial... Technically, it's only for the geeks who can figure out how to get in at the moment... But once it's been tested and taken through its paces it will open up to the public.
I hope that happens very soon because I quite like it -- more than FB!
I just thought I'd try to get some folks on here to give a try just for giggles before it gets released officially. Right now it's kinda like being a kid let loose inside Willy Wonka's factory.... :-)

Yeah.... It make take a few attempts. For me, I also had to try it a couple times before it let me in.
I suspect there may be more news on this from Google at some point this week. An official release date would be nice, but I'm not that optimistic.

Thanks for sending me an invite. So far, unfortunately, I've only been able to see your profile... I'm getting 404 errors for the actual links you've sent. No luck yet, but I'll try periodically.

I'll send a new one. Yes, the procedure to get into this closed trial is flaky... BUT you should not be getting 404s.... That's a first.
