Where do wear like the lower edge of the kilt

I'm curious as to what the breakdown of the answers to this question would be for different age demographics.

As am I! I like mine where no knee is showing. If I wear mine above or at mid knee, I feel very uncomfortable.

Top or slightly above just feels better to me. What others do is completely up to them. To be honest, I rarely notice, save when the kilt is worn too long.

I agree! Except I don't even notice when it is too long.


This is the one thing I think about the "tradition" of a kilt. Think about it, if all of us had followed "tradition" most of us would NOT be wearing a kilt. Tradition in my family was jeans. The fact that I choose to wear a kilt is breaking tradition. Therefore, when I wear a kilt, I wear for comfort, not tradition. I don't care if it looks bad or if I am breaking every traditional rule of wearing a kilt (for example: I don't want my knees showing for the most part). As long as it feels right, I am gooood! And as long as if feels right for you, I don't think it matters what everyone else thinks

Those are my thoughts on Tradition. I also think you will start seeing the younger generation wear them lower on the waist and go lower on the knees.

Anywhere between the center of the 'cap, to very slightly above the top edge of the 'cap is good for me... with the shorter side being what I seem to prefer.

As to the gentleman above, I agree with the outlook that a man should wear his kilt to please himself. That said, if the 'lower on the waist, below the knee" thing takes off, I for one, would think it a terrible shame...

A properly fitted and worn kilt (meaning that the top is a couple inches above the true waist and the bottom is between mid knee and an inch or so above the 'cap) does things for the male frame that p@nts could only dream of. That quality, to my eye (and a great many that know far more about this sort of thing than me), is completely distroyed when the kilt is sagged.

In my regiment we were taught that the proper way to wear the kilt was for it to fall at the top of the kneecap.
I have read that the much older tradition was for it to be three inches above the kneecap.
I am seriously uncomfortable with the idea that it should fall any lower than the top of the kneecap, and get quite peeved when my wife starts telling me that it should be lower.
Where did she get to know about how the kilt should be worn (I am sure her Highland dancing mistress did not tell her how men should wear it!).
When the kilt is worn outdoors in the rain, it will saw at the back of the knees if it is even half an inch too long!

Three quarters of the year - top of my knee cap. Dead of winter - 2 inches lower to cover my cold knobby knees. I have 4 heavy weight long ones just for winter daily use.

This makes me wonder how men wore the 'great kilt' ages ago. I wonder if there were any real 'rules' or perhaps they went by how the weather was.

I checked off the top of the knee, but looking at pictures, I wear it a little lower. Not quite in the middle of the knee cap but not at the top of it either.
I guess more like Jack Daw 'tho I haven't measured.

If it's just a little too far above the knee cap, it looks too much like a miniskirt in my eyes. My beautiful knees and sculpted, brawny thighs should remain modestly adorned.

Exactly 22" below the upper edge of the kilt.

This is the only appropriate response for me, too. Although for me it is 23".

I don't know where it hits my knee, if I look then the edge lowers. I just put it on and hitch it up until it feels comfortable.

My 1st kilt is 24" and feels too long unless worn too high at the waist to feel really comfortable for me.

One of the reasons I prefer the top of the knee is that I can sit down and put one ankle on the other knee without messing up the pleats as they arent under my ankle. With both feet on the floor my legs go to sleep on me.
