I would go with the hose first. I speak from personal experience. I got a kilt, sporran and a sporran belt a couple weeks ago. Haven't even got a kilt pin yet, but did order some hose (black) and garters from Sock Dreams yesterday. What a cool website too, picked it up from some post here on XMarks. No tax, no shipping if yer in the USA. Kilt hose (cotton for summer) 8 bucks, garters 12.

I'll give a contrary view. You didn't say how you are wearing your kilt. If I'm going to the games or a somewhat formal event I wear kilt hose. For daily wear I frequently wear boots and socks scrunched down. Soccer socks or snowboard socks are great for this and come fairly cheaply in a lot of colors. I almost always wear a belt. To me it just dosn't look "finnished" without a belt even though I don't wear a dirk. The only time I don't wear a belt is when I'm wearing a waistcoat and jacket.

I'll chime in with it depends.

My wife really likes the look of a kilt with a belt over it; even though I don't need it to hold my kilt up I do choose my battles carefully.

On the other hand, if I pick one shirt and one tie out of the closet I probably have three different pair of hose that will work, I like the flexibility and options afforded my having multiple pair of hose to choose from.

We could start a collect to buy permanent marker in tartan colors. Maybe we can set this up as a charitable organization and make the donations tax deductible.

I have to agree with the majority on the hose before belt. But something to keep in mind later, if you are looking for the large plate style belt, if you get one of the types with the hook-and-loop interiors, you can get two belts (brown and black) and then just get different buckles to change your look when you are going with the belt. Once you've worn the belt a few times, the curve/fold of the belt will be semi-permanent, so it's easy-peasy to swap your brass for a less formal silver-tone, or into your dress plate. So, with different buckles, two belts, and a bunch of hose, you can get different looks the different days of the week.

I sort of got things together but if i had to choose, hose first. I always wear a belt when kilted, never do the waistcoat thing.

Jean as you put together your husbands outfit, remember to you at everyday item in a kilted light. For example, while at Wal-Mart yesterday as I walked through the ladies section I saw a number of wide leather belts. Some would work for kilt belts for someone half my size. Some would require a change of buckles other might not. My fancy sporran belt is two thin (3/4 inch wide) ladies belts. I buckle the two belts together, passed the other ends through the keeper on the sporran.

Look at tool belts, if you have a tack/western wear shop in the area do they have wide belts (1.5 inch or wider) they would make a nice kilt belt.
