Sometimes you gotta strike out on your own. I was downtown and many were going to see a performance at the Piping Center of small pipes from 10PM to 2AM. I did not believe I could stay awake for that so I got a bite to eat at the Bloc. Then they cleared the tables back and a very tattooed, pierced set watched a grunge band. I don't remember their name.

I, being a piper, keep ear plugs in my pocket most of the time and they were very useful. When I left there I stopped at a small more conventional place near the Piping Center and met Solicitor Cobb who would later take me to court to see how things work there.

A great story, so far. Thanks for taking all those pics and sharing them (and their context) with us.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

I used to frequent the Park Bar a lot when I lived in Glasgow's West End (1998-2003). A nice 'shop' with good beer and atmosphere. Another favourite was the Uisge Beatha on Woodlands Rd. Both served good pint of Deucher's IPA plus the Uisge Beatha had an excellent gantry of single malts to choose from :-).

Super pics Peter, especially the ones from the University area and the west end of Glasgow, evoking happy memories from my student days. It was great to meet you and your daughter at North Berwick.

Thanks for sharing your photos, Peter. Looks like you had a great time and got to experience some non-toristy sights and sounds. Can't wait to go myself.

Simon Fraser fought as MacShimidh, a Highland chief… wrapped and belted in a plaid over the top of his linen shirt, like his ordinary kinsmen. He put a bonnet on his head, and stuck the Fraser emblem, a sprig of yew, in it. With the battle cry, A'Chaisteal Dhunaidh and the scream of the pipes, they charged to battle. Something Fitz recommended was to get a tour bus and travel the city listening to them deliver an oral history. It stops various places and one can get off and get back on later. I went to the Clyde and to the Transportation Museum.

Glasgow had some 40 shipyards going in the late 19th and well into the 20th centuries. They built the Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Elizabeth II as well as the HMS Hood. Hood was 860 feet long and displaced 43,000 tons. She took two years to build, and additional two years to fit out and when in action against the Bismark, she took two minutes to sink.
There are nice models of these ships in the museum. Hood here shown full with a person for scale, is about 12 feet long.

The second is a detail of the Hood.

Our first musical event was the games at North Berwick. Driving there we began to see a distinct hill in the distance and rather than pass by it we drew closer

and closer,

and closer:

I determined to climb it if I could. We had two bands that had to compete and some people from each wanted to go. After they competed we hit the trail.
