Sorry Todd, I didn't have the page scrolled up enough to see your post. Still trying to get used to the blasted new bifocals, my first pair and they are driving me nuts!

I have one of their Balmorals... it's a beauty! I'd certainly recommend it.

FWIW, our regimental balmorals had a small stiched khaki bow at the back, while the glengarries had loose ribbons. My Scottish-made balmoral that I bought over thirty years ago has loose ribbons. Now, I prefer them loose, but I think you just can wear them how you like them.

I wear a balmoral, and I leave the ribbons long and untied. <wink>

    Warhoover,

Your quote, "...and they are driving me nuts!" reminds me of a kilt/bar joke.

A Scotsman walks in to a bar with a car's steering wheel hanging from under his kilt. The bar tender asks him, "Why do you have a car's steering wheel hanging from under your kilt?" The Scotsman replies, "I don't know, but it's driving me nuts!"

Just to be completely contrary... I have had my balmoral for only a few days now (from Glengaryhats.com - same one as laird Hamish's). No idea how to tie, not thrilled with loose, don't want to cut, so I've just been laying them inside before I pur the durn thing on.

I think the trick is to knot them first; just one over the other and pull. Then it's pretty easy to make a loop in one and wrap the other over the top and through. You'll probably need to trim the ends when you're done. On my Glengarryhats bonnet, I had to trim about 1 inch or so.

    Tied or Untied

I had no idea that the state of a bonnet tied or untied was of issue. Mine has always been tied, but after reading these posts, I guess I will untie mine.
