Not to hijack the thread, but I really think there would only be two ways to offer a less expensive casual kilt as a production item -- either you cut the cost of the labor (as those who make kilts in pakistan do) or you cut the manufacturing time. If you could come up with a machine that would take a length of cloth, pleat and sew the pleats, then you could mass produce them. Or, if you really loved kilt making, and had a spouse to support you in your hobby, you could offer your own labor for less.
But without being able to cut one of those factors, time or labor cost, what you see on the web is the best price available in a production environment.

The catch with mass-production is that you loose the ability to tailor a kit to a persons actual size (ie using waist, hips and length) You can get away with this in a solid color kilt like a UK, but tartan is not as forgiving You are correct though that one of those resources has got to radically drop to allow the price to fall.

Whoa, I didn't mean to imply that I would be making low cost kilts for others...I had meant for my 'own' usage. But, the info and opinions are greatly appreciated.
I actually wear a Stillwater economy kilt and love it. I want to buy a Blackwatch tartan standard and economy. I'd buy a standard Wallace were it available.
