Agreed with previous posters.
I too have been doing this for many years, and lemme tell you I've heard & viewed more complete and utter nonsense than I'd ever be able to record.
Case in point....
I pipe at several weddings per year where the bridegroom and his men have rented kilted formalwear. Apparently it's from the same establishment.
When I arrive one site, all the fellers have their kilts on backwards, one flash on outside of leg - the other inside, their ghillie brouges are wrapped up to their knees, and the sgians are shoved in their belts.
When I ask what numpty came up with this, they always reply the vendor told them it was the proper way to wear it.

Big Mike:
I love your attitude. Wearing my MacGregor Tartan also converts me from the homely ruffian to a person of gentle nature (unless riled of course).

I agree with Big Mikey. Wear what you like, and what looks best with your outfit.......and of course welcome to the rabble!
Cheers/Salante!

It's a little like tartans--no real rules, just good taste.
Pick what looks good, and a black stone would look very good with a MacGregor tartan.
I have an amethyst for use with my Robertson Red great kilt, and it looks good, too. The two tartans are close enough that I could recommend that as well. In fact, if you can't find one and want one, PM and and let's talk. I think I have an extra I bought years ago with some other stuff that I could part with at a very reasonable price.

I'm with Big Mikey. You're a MacGregor, lad. We come from a long line of scoundrels and outlaws. Wear whatever you please.
