I've actually seen guys use weights on the end so that it will drape over the shoulder with minimal movement. Weight will also need to be sewn-in on the back side to evenly disperse the "pull" over the shoulder. Put the brooch over the weights on the front, and it still looks like it's attached.
The best weight to use is the "lead tape" that guys use on golf clubs. Many sporting goods and department stores stock this stuff in the Golf area. You should be able to stitch-in a couple "tack" spots to hold it firmly.
This would need to be inside and out of the wind. If you have the pocket, the weights will help there too.

Greetings!
A friend of mine takes a "baste" stitch through his plaid, and his jacket (under the eppulatte) so it doesn't show. *he* likes it, but I haven't tried it.
My wife occasionally (often?)"borrows" my plaid if she's cold, and didn't bring anything of her own (Ok by me, but it eliminates stitching as an option).
Here's my solution...I hope this makes sense. My plaid is rather heavy, and "drags" my jacket lapel "off-center" when I wear it...So I asked a friend (a seamstress...In fact, she made the jacket..) to add a small "loop" on the inside, exactly under the eppulatte. I then attach a 1 inch wide twill (in a color that matches my shirt...Usually white) to a "suspender-type" clip, that attached to my kilt at the top edge, on the side. (If you have ever worn a shoulder holster, you get the idea). It holds upo the plaid, and allows the jacket to hang "normally", regardless of wheather its buttoned or not. And the twill strap is vitually invisible in use.
Hey...Just a thought!

My Fly Plaid from Kinloch Anderson came with a little elastic loop sewn into it for attaching it to the epaulet button. I tried pinning the brooch to the jacket, but it would not penetrate the fabric, so I just use the loop.

I had two small "sewn eyelets" (sort of like tiny, round buttonholes) installed (installed? Well, you get the idea) in my dress jacket. Yes, they show when I'm not wering the plaid. But no worse than the "normal holes" would.
I considered wearing the broach (I wear a pennannular)w/o the plaid once or twice (haven't actually done it, though). It would "fill" the holes...And I'm not quite sure how silly it would look. Ham? Care to weigh in on this one?

Well Hal, since you ask.....
I am sorry but I think it would look pretty daft! In my opinion, and this is nothing to do with Scottish tradition, it's for the lassies to wear jewellery in that manner and in that position.
Personally, I don't even like the fly plaid and do not wear one but, returning to the brooch: I feel our Dress Jackets are elaborate enough, yet stunning in their simplicity, without further adornment.
Sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear from me, but you did ask!

Honestly, Ham? That's about what I was thinking (And probbably why I never tried it!) But, based on *my * fashion sense, I thought it best to get a "second opinion"!
Welcome back, BTW!

it came to me in a flash and I will share my brainwave with all my kilted friends !!!
sticky bcked "velcro" and tiny square stuck to the rear of your jacket lapel -invisible at all times !
then a tiny square on the end of the plaid and it stays put no matter what!!
I dont naormally wear my plaid but im doing some Pipeing in June and the plaid looks good for pipeing!!

Sticky back velcro doesn't work long term on fabric. You could use it but I advise stitching the edges.

I have to agree with Hamish on this one. The only time I've ever seen a fly plaid is on a regimental Pipe band. Unless it's part of a uniform, it seems like guilding the lily to me.
