it is better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission
I may not be the best one to give advice, as my wife and I of seven years are separated, but I do recall getting out of the doghouse on more than one occasion, specifically for buying trains or guns.
First, figure out something that she really wants or needs done to the house, etc... Either then give it to her or just do it, the shock will draw the attention away from that new kilt. Also, if she does the checking, make sure to enter something related to the car or house in place of the kilt, that way it can be somewhat overlooked from the financial standpoint.
Finally, once she does see the kilt, unless you are a closet kilter, then tell her you traded something for it, or you bought it at the thrift store, just come up with a convincing story and stick to it, the more believable the better it is for your story.
Good luck, and you may just want to fluff up those couch cushions, because honesty is the best policy in any relationship. On the other hand, you could go with the old adage of, it is better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission.
Cheers
Chris

1. Tell the truth, as soon as possible. It'll be there tomorrow, act fast.
2. Ask her how it looks. If you're brave, ask before you take out the basting stitches. Tell her how much it didn't cost.

Of all of these suggestions, I like the "...it was on back-order" one the most. I can see dropping that rather nonchalantly and having it succeed.
One of my faves is the "...I had to act fast here! They've stopped making these...if I didn't order it right then and there, I would never have been able to get my hands on one. Why...it's a collector's item now...".

Its Jerry's fault he miscoded his transporter and when you called he said the administrative problems with getting re-listed in stock were so bad he gave it to you.
By the way Jerry my transporter address is ##47678bhtg^7nnbk4568915762
If you want to make another mistake.

You have to talk to her in the language she'll understand. Tell her it was such a bargain you couldn't pass it up. Besides, with all the money you saved, you can buy her something too.

Yeah right....Jerry with a shipping issue.....that's like Hamish saying "Sorry fellas, can't leave the house I've misplaced my kilts" or better yet that's like Jamie saying "What? it's Maroon." Never gonna happen.

You were kidnapped by a bunch of mean Pirates; and the only way you could escape was to order a new Kilt or they would burn your house down and kill the dog (if you don't have a dog, they were going to buy one and kill it anyway) so what else could a sensitive person like yourself do????

Tell her this while you are safely locked in the bathroom. (I suggest you take food & drink in there to last 24 hours.)
