I think the religion discussed wasn't so much religion, as the way a group who happens to belong to a religion may've effected dress through history.

Her argument is that the anatomy of men and women is different and as such we are (in general) all wearing the wrong garments - men have dangly bits and should be in a wrap around garment; women do not and should be in trousers.

She believes that there was some cataclysmic event which caused a domino effect and forced men into long hose and then trousers. She tells me that she has eliminated war and warfare and is now looking at religion or some form of pandemic to be the cause. It seems that the heart of the matter comes down to western education, which in turn points to religion.

When she next comes down to eat me out of house and home I will pump her for more information.

    Regards

The cynic in me says never trust academics when they are trying to delve into the distant past, especially females ones who are looking at gender issues. They have so much cultural baggage that it is impossible for them to look objectivly at any evidence, if there is any.

Flashman described 'snoopopathic meddlers who strut about with a fly whisk and a notebook, prodding lies out of the natives and over-tipping the dragoman on college funds' sums it up quite nicely.
The 'Eathen in his idleness bows down to wood and stone,
'E don't obey no orders unless they is his own,
He keeps his side arms awful,
And he leaves them all about,
Until up comes the Regiment and kicks the 'Eathen out.

Agreed. But then Flashy was usually right on target, wasn't he?
