Nice work, New Englander!
You have taken your first step into a larger world.
Don't be dissuaded by the humble suggestions presented here. While opinions appear to be split on a waistcoat with a U.K., it does not mean you have to bounce back across the spectrum to printed t-shirts. A button down shirt (with or without a tie) will still work very well!
Experiment, experiment, experiment!
(I can't believe I'm telling that to a science teacher!!)

Does anyone out there have any pics of themselves sporting a sporran and Utilikilt?
Warning: I'll also be wearing a flat cap with the outfit so those with certain sensitivities might want to look away...

I have a couple of rough-and-tumble camouflage contemporary kilts that I've made. They don't have pockets, so I have to have something to carry my wallet and keys around in. I use a simple black fanny-pack much like this one...

...and hang it in front, rather like a sporran. It cost all of about ten bucks. However, it's NOT a sporran, and I think the ccordura-nylon fanny pack look works a little better than a more traditional sporran. But that's just me.

Gentlemen, the good lad has donned his first kilt and presented us with a picture. He dressed it up a bit with a vest and tie. Is it too much to ask to just say a few positive things, this being his first kilt, rather than rag on the guy about whether his choice of attire meets your exacting standards, or not?
New Englander, I think you look just fine, and good for you for strapping on the Utilikilt and getting out with it. Carry on. If you decide to get a nice wool tartan kilt sometime in the future, try the tweedy vest with that, it might look great. Meanwhile, knock 'em dead.

Thanks for your support, Alan. But I've been hanging around on this forum long enough to know that posting a pic invites all sorts of input and opinions -- and I'm glad. Usually the girlfriend is the only one who sees me kilted and she's still a bit wary, so it's good to get some constructive criticism from the rabble...and some kilted legends!
I did go ahead and order a day sporran. It's similar to this one, but in brown. I'll post another pic for review as soon as I get it in the mail.

It's very exciting getting your first kilt. It's also quite a step going out and about for the first time. But, you will very soon get used to it. Enjoy your kilt wearing!

As another kilted teacher (although I teach Theatre Arts at the college level), I find the kilt a great way to demonstrate to students that it is ok to break out of the group "norm." I also mix formal and informal elements when I'm dressing, so I rather like the Mocker and the vest.

The wonderful thing about this site... is you get various honest opinions.. it helps you figure out how you feel comfortable dressing... I was uneducated in kilt wear, when I joined the forum, and with all the information I gathered, I found the way, I felt more comfortable. Granted, not everyone approves of the style kilt, I prefer to wear.. but its a more traditional form, while being a bit contemporary at the same time.. I wear 4 yd box pleat kilts. I learned I like the higher rise of a more traditional fit, over a jeans waist fit of a UK. I had a Survivor, and ended up selling it to buy my first "real kilt" a Freedom Kilts 4 yd box pleat Leatherneck, which I am very happy with.
Experiment with different styles, and levels of dress, you might find out you are just a casual kind of guy, or you may end up feeling more comfortable being a contemporary business casual type... there are many styles of kilts and manners of dress... and with this site.. you can experience them all.. and find your niche. Keep looking and yes, post pictures, and get honest pinions, both pro and con, and see where you find your happy medium..
