I agree with all of this mostly on the fact that Kilties generally have better fashion sense then the average man. I believe there are some people in the world who never learned to dress themselves. Don't believe me? Go walk through Walmart.
It would be nice if the rest of the world took half the care in how they look as the average XMTS member. I look at the traditional guidelines for Highland dress as just what they are guidelines. not strict rules. There should always be room for personal style in what you wear. If you break a rule here or there no big deal, if you break every rule every time you might need to relook at your attire.

Comment withdrawn. Not the place for light hearted quips it seems.

Now, why would you go and lob a grenade into the aquarium like that and then go wander off?

Rex,
Alan is a very good fellow and I am proud to call him friend.
However he has this bee in his bonnet about the term "fashion" (a word that he hates) and the concept of rules/conventions in attire. Since XMTS is a kilt site and we do talk about Fashion and the rules and conventions of highland attire it sometimes gets to him and he has to blow off steam.
I don't think Alan understands that when the experts here weigh in, that they are going to state the exact "letter of the law" and recommend the very best choice. Once that opinion is given then it is up to the individual to process that advice and see how they can (or can't) make it work for them.
I strongly suspect that Sandford, Todd, and MoR all own and wear t-shirts, sneakers, and maybe even a ballcap. But when they talk about highland attire they are trying to present the rules as the know them to help others understand them.
I like that there is room for all here on XMTS, including my friend Alan and me!

Cheers
Jamie :ootd:

[QUOTE=Panache;822862]Rex,

For me, much of what this thread is about is the so called citing of the "letter of the law," I think I know what you mean when you say that, but unfortunately, many of the "experts" quote nonsense (much of it created by Englishman during the Victorian era) as their authority. At best, you can cite past custom, but you exceed yourself when you start talking about "the law," and you do not do any favor to the new kilt wearer who comes to this site for advice. Don't even use the words, "rule" or "law," and and the use of the word "exact" in this context is grossly inappropriate.
