Jim,
I looked for a long while before I found somewhere that carried Confederate tartan kilts. www.kiltmart.com, www.thefrugalcorner.com both have the Confederate tartan kilt stocked, and of course rocky at USA kilts and Matthew at the Scottish Tartans museum could also get it
Just thought I'd throw it out there in case you were looking for it

Hi, Rebel, and greetings from the bottom end of Africa.
About 110 years ago we had a war much like yours, except the losing side weren’t called Rebs, they were Boers.
Family of mine fought (or at least bore arms) on both sides. My mom’s granny, who came from a Boer family, was married to a Scot who left the Transvaal for the duration of the war to keep out of trouble. But her brothers all fought in the commandos, and her sisters were interned in concentration camps.
My dad’s paternal grandfather had fought for Germany in the 1860-61 war against France, and had come to the Cape Colony to keep his sons out of war. But my dad’s Afrikaner uncle, a student safely in Stellenbosch (near Cape Town), joined the Town Guard and patrolled the outskirts in khaki uniform.
Later he went to live in the Transvaal, and changed his tune – he told his pals up there that his father had forced him to be a “khaki”, and that he had wanted to fight for the Boers.
Many of his relatives, who lived in the Transvaal, did go out with the commandos.
Regards,
Mike

Mike,
That is a great story! I worked for a while in California with a guy from Cape Town, he was awesome, I have much respect for South Africans, he later moved to Nevada, but he left a very big impression on my life. My wife often tries to get me to sound/speak like him. Glad to meet you for sure

Hi, Rebel – wanting to sound like a South African – an interesting concept.
There are many different South African ways of speaking English.
I grew up in Cape Town, where we learned to speak a bit like Englishmen – although no Englishman actually sounds quite like that.
In the Eastern Cape, where I now live, people have much flatter vowels.
And in the Transvaal and Natal there are other varieties of English.
Then you get Afrikaners who speak English some of the time, and battle a bit. Many speak it fluently (with one accent or another), but there are parts of the country where you get no service in the shops if you don’t have some Afrikaans.
Black people have an entirely different way of speaking, which comes from the more limited range of vowels in their home language (it’s quite unlike African-American, or Caribbean). Aside from English and Afrikaans, South Africa has nine official languages belonging to the Bantu language group.
But black people who have attended schools which used to be for whites only speak just like my children.
I recently met a man who comes from the US (I forget which state for the moment) and is married to an Eastern Cape woman.
His Rs are still American, but his vowels are pure Eastern Cape. An interesting sound!
Regards,
Mike
