    Re: Finally got one!!!!!!

One thing that I have noticed, while looking for bag designs, is that the bags are usually attached to the outside of the cantle on older models. Now they seem to all be attached to the inside (which I personally think looks better). I was just wonder what was the reasoning for the change.

Cheers MacRobert! I just placed a bid...let's hope! The brass obviously needs a little work, can this be easily done just by using Brasso, or would something else be required? If I win, I would obviously have a new bag made for the cantle - Scott would have yet another commission on his hands, hahaha!

    Cheers,

WOOOHOOOO! Looks like you may be joining the club!

Brasso works well as long as it isn't badly scratched up.

I hope so, Harold. Can anything be done about severe scratches? What about discolouration, if any? Overall, the cantle on ebay looks pretty good, but one can never see everything through a couple of photos.

    Cheers,

Deep scratches are hard to deal with but light scratches may be buffed out. You might try a local musical instrument repair shop and the can buff it out. Discoloration shouldnt be a problem. I just used brasso and the let is slowly start building an even patina by leaving it out instead of in a storage bag. I didnt want it to be super bright. I looked at it and it does look quite nice and even better than the one I bought from Iain. The price might seem a little expensive but the prices are only going to go up on these.

Thanks Harold. Yes, if the price continues to climb, I may have to back out. There's only so much I am willing to pay for a cantle in this particular style.

    Cheers,

    Cheers,
Scratches (surface can be buffed out), GOUGES (where material has be moved or removed) can be minimized, to a degree, but are going to remain.

There are a few things that might get in the way of simply Brass-o polishing it. I've now dealt with 3 cantles that have had some sort of coating on them. In one case a coating that had to be physically buffed off (marines stripper wouldn't remove it).
These finishes were not MoD, they must have been applied after the bags were withdrawn from service.

One problem with the finish coat is that over the long term it doesn't seem to prevent tarnish in areas that either weren't properly cleaned or which had the silver-solder join. (the "stem" of the press studs on the inside which connect the bag to the cantle actually pierce the faces but are polished flat).

Most all discolouration can be buffed out.

I wouldn't hold my breath on this one NOT going up in price. The last few I was watching hit ~130GBP / $200US.
But then again, you never know.
