Yup. Been like this for a long time. It is more a Fantasy faire than a Renaissance faire. People will show up in anything weird, outlandish, odd, risque, or otherwise abnormal. I've seen people in Stormtrooper outfits, Smurf costumes, people dressed like pumpkins, "furries", and everything else you could imagine.
In one sense, it's disappointing that people can't stick to the theme of the event. It would be really cool to have an "authentic" experience where there is some effort put into the historical aspect. But on the other hand, it's very entertaining to see what people come up with. The "anything goes" attitude there is quite refreshing when compared to everyday hum-drum life.

Re: Ren Faire Kilted Wench
I'm with Tobus, as much as I enjoy seeing some of the very elaborate period (and sometimes fantasy) garb, at faire or at Dickens fest, I find myself wondering about stuff like how heavy it is or can they sit down? etc...

I love my friend Elizabeth's Elizabeth I with sword and breastplate, but I know she can't get into the privy or even sit down in it.

Speaking as one who dresses up in some of those styles (in fact, getting ready to do that tonight for a little gathering), yeah... as much as I enjoy it occasionally, I'm very glad we don't have to wear those kinds of layers and items now.

EXTREMELY common at California Ren Faires.....belly dancers and their entourage(s).
Lots of this at TRF too. There's even a Greek village area where belly dancing happens all day long. I really admire the women who have the stamina to do it for that long.
Plus several of the musical acts (like Zardoz's favourite, Circa Paleo) have belly dancers as part of the act. I spend way more time watching the belly dancers than I should...

Perhaps the "Whisky Wench" can inspire your costume with the right balance of tartan, Scottish appeal, and well, whisky! That cape is nice too!

Note that she is from Scotland and in the article she's not shy about off-color language.

I like this a lot!
I could do this, I have an RR bonnet on the way. And of course I have a cape. What lady of worth doesn't have a cape?

Sorry for my ignorance on the subject, but what exactly is a renaissance faire? I've seen them mentioned a few things on this forum, but I've never heard of them anywhere else. I think it's something that's just completely passed me by
