As for the "how it is done" factor this is often taken with a pinch of salt by those observing it. We will either do the same ourselves from personal preference or we will not. I like plaids in certain circumstances, for example, others would not wear one under any circumstances whatsoever.
All part of the variety that makes this forum so enjoyable.

I was kind of hoping for a real dust up between you and Trefor at least...I remember i worked with a guy from Lewis and a guy from Wales and they had the most interesting cultural caricatures to offer each other when they were in disagreement.
Seriously, I am reminded of a MacAuslan story by Fraser. As to entertainers...is he really that much worse than Sean Connery or others?

Jock and I are gentlemen Seumas so we disagree politely and with respect.
Despite the spelling of my name (I was named after a Welsh footballer even though I cannot kick a ball to save my life) and the fact that I can speak the language better than many natives, and the fact that I live in Wales, I am not Welsh but a Scottish/English mix so I do regard the Kilt as my national dress as well as regarding it as an internationally valid garment.
We cannot all like the same styles and will often see something that we do not like as well as styles that we do. We can also all make our own rules as to when and where we would wear the Kilt when we are free to choose. That's why I said this forum is so enjoyable because to the variety of viewpoints.

Yes, i am quite sure of that, the remark on my part was meant to be humorous. But I am not a gentleman, so perhaps it was offensive. If so I regret it.
To be sure, there was plenty of respect between the men I referred to earlier. The rough banter eased tension in a difficult job.

I am not offended and I am sure that Jock equally took it in good part.
The expression of apology would also indicate that your also have gentlemanly qualities Seumas.
A bit of banter can be fun providing it is clearly seen as such.

I would just like to say, for the 6,429th time that I rather like cream or white kilt hose, done right, and I even own a couple of pairs and wear them when I feel like it.
I'm doing this just to give a bit of balance to this discussion, so that new guys don't get the idea that wearing cream or white socks are a sin that will send you straight to hell..... Also, I write this because the internet is also chock-full of pictures of actual living and breathing Scots wearing these socks. T'ain't no right nor wrong in this discussion, no matter how adamant some people are about their opinion, or how conscientiously some folks try to write the "white socks = bad" line up such that it appears that well...EVERYBODY knows that white socks are just gauche.
Then again, maybe I'm gauche. However, I'm entitled to my opinion.
Also, Jock is entitled to his opinion about how clothes ought to be worn. Absolutely he is entitled, and since he's on the forum, he's entitled to write out his opinion, as long as it's done some sort of reasonably politely and with respect. Everybody else on the forum is entitled to their opinions as well, and also entitled to wear whatever they bluidy well please, whenever it pleases them. Jock, also can wear whatever he darned well feels like, whenever the inclination strikes him.
I like Jock. I am happy to read his opinion. I look forward to having a meal and a pint with him on my upcoming trip to Scotland this summer. However, when in the USA, at least, I'll wear my kilt however it seems best to me, and not get upset with Jock if some detail of what I do might not pass muster with him.
I think I need to take Jock a cowboy hat as a present, so that I can get Mrs. Jock to glue it down on his head and then I can get angry with him for wearing it crooked, or something!

As a complete aside, I could care less if Jermaine Jackson wore a kilt, or not. Then again, I put up a post about Kanye West wearing a leather contemporary kilt, a while ago, so I guess I don't have a leg to stand on, here.

Alan, I, too, have said it until I am blue in the face. I like the look of white hose. My avatar shows me in very formal highland dress but with gray hose. Never again, when I wear my PC I will wear white hose.

I am wearing white hose now with my green USAK Irelands National. It looks sharp! Should I switch to orange hose and really confuse people?
I stuck this in the wrong string - was ment for the St.Pats Day kilt string - getting more absent minded every day

Meef.
In this opinion, entertainers, being entertainers are more flambouyant than the population at large. Yawn.
Mr. Jackson appears the most "traditional" and without a DNA test, who is to say with certainty if he or the other two pictured do not have Scottish heritage? As if that matters....
