Being af the thining hair brigade I would say wear what keeps the burn away and don't let what others think keep you from being comfortable. if you wear bandanas and they make you happy who cares what someone else thinks.

I usually wear an old fedora or sometimes an Akubra stockos hat when the sun gets too hot: such as last summer (July) at the Harpenden Highland Gathering.

I wear "driving caps" a lot, and picked up a wool balmoral for a very good price last year at the Games, but honestly...when it's hot...
I wear a bandana on my head a LOT. I've been working out in the park, heaving heavy stuff around for a couple of months, now and the bandana saves the top of my head from getting fried. If I wore a "real" hat, it'd come off while I'm throwing. If I slathered sunscfreen up there, it'd get in my eyes and burn....fuhgeddit. My solution is a bandana....usually a dark blue one from Orvis.
......but I've thought about the noggin wraps from sportkilt. I still might try one.

Most of the time I just squirt a lil extra sunscreen on the top of my head, but when I know I'm gonna be out in the sun a long time, I'm not usually kilted and I wear a do-rag - I'm sittin' with my backside stuck in an inner tube or (since I got married) an inflatable raft, spinnin' 'round in circles on the Grand Ronde River, drinkin' cheap beer (NO glass on the river, that's bad form!). If I'm lucky, I can get outta the tube/raft without assistance when we reach the pull-out spot.

I do it from time to time.
Sometimes it's hard to pull off.
In darker, subtler tartans and colors it's not such a big deal. A hoody, or denim/leather jacket will help you pull it off nicely. Goes good with heavy boots and dark socks.
I find that if the colors get too wild, then I look like I came from a festival of some sort.

I frequently wear a Buff when kilted. Versatile, as it can be used as head-gear, neck-gear, head-band etc etc. Especially good as I have long hair...
Our whole family has an array of different patterns for different occasions.

I'd say the only thing that really shouldn't be
worn with a kilt is underpants, but they are
ok if you are also wearing pink bunny slippers.

Well at least you didn't say "bear foot slippers."
I don't typically wear a bandana/head wrap when kilted, but always when riding (I thought I was done with "helmet head" when I retired from the army). So... if I take along a kilt to change into when not on the bike, there's a chance there will be a "flydana" or similar on my noggin - otherwise I wind up with my hair looking like Christopher Lloyd's after a long binge.

OK, admittedly, mine doesn't even look that good after an hour or two in the helmet.
