It is that. The time I camped there on the edge of a loch the nights were so cold my butane bottles froze. This is where I had my first real taste of Haggis.

Better,by far,the cold than the "dreaded midge".

What persecution there was was the killing of many thousands of Covenanters in the late 1600's as a result of the king wishing to impose an episcopacy upon the churchgoers at that time.
Just to correct the issues here; first off.. The Church of Scotland (CofS) known informally by its pre-Union Scots name, The Kirk (of Scotland), is the national church of Scotland. It is a Presbyterian church, which had it founding out of the Scottish Reformation. It is not a state church, like the Church of England, which the sitting monarch is the head of. While in Scotland the monarch is only a member. As a Presbyterian church, the Kirk has no bishops, but is rather governed by elders and ministers (known as presbyters) sitting in a series of courts. Now as to the ruling of the Roman Catholic Church being ruled by Bishops, I beleve that the Pope has been omited from the conversation.

Boy, Alec Beaton must have an unnatural...fondness for his livestock if he is so worried about them...
Something to perhaps mention back to him next time!

But, as I recall, there is a Commissioner who represents the Queen at the General Assembly. ?

True she is represented at the annual General Assembly by a Lord High Commissioner, but the role is purely formal. She is a monarch afterall, but still only a member not the head, like her possition of Supreme Governor of the Church of England.

But only as an interested observer. The queen attends Presbyterian church when at Balmoral (Crathie) but has no role or influence in its organisation. An awful lot of people died to make sure of that. But to get back on subject, there was no religious motive behind the Glencoe massacre, more setting an example by the King's man in Scotland, Stair, to "encourage the others" as they used to say when shooting their own men in the 1914-18 war. The Campbells would have been chosen as reliable King's men but it was the fact that it was "hamesucken" - attacking your hosts while enjoying their hospitality - that blackened the name of the Campbells.
Back off subject again, I don't believe the McGregors were as notorious cattle thieves as the Border clans, Scotts, Bells, Armstrongs, Douglas's etc.. They got so bad they were exported to Ireland to clean up there.

Off the main topic, as I already stated the reason for the animosity, you forget the MacFarlane' as cattle theives... they don't call a full moon "MacFarlanes Lantern" for nothing.

Alright lads, let's try and remember the forum rules on religious discussions and hope that that puts an end to the comments about this church or that church, etc.

Now that is an excellent idea. I usually think of great riposte 5 minutes too late, but I will remember that one.
