I'm going to definitely agreed with Newsome on this one. I can't recall ever using "kilt" as a plural reference when talking to someone. And I also believe that the plural form of beer is "beers". Unless you've already pluralized it by saying things such as "Six pack of Beer".
To each their own. If someone came up to me and said "How many kilt do you own" I wouldn't correct them, I'd just answer the question. Personally I think it sounds weird though.

Ah, I believe you've hit upon something.
One beer, two beers, three beers, fine. But after twenty or so, who can blame you if you drop the s?
So if you have, say, twenty, you can call them kilt if you like.
Sounds like a reasonable compromise?

Absolutely.

I would use "kilts" for plural use
My Grandmother used to call my kilt "kilts" and it drove me nuts ("he's wearing his kilts today!") No, just one of them. I have also heard "pair of kilts" to describe a single kilt.
I do not use "the kilt" in place of "a kilt"- I wear a kilt, not the kilt. I know others prefer "the kilt", it just sounds odd to me.

Who really cares what the plural is, most people who own more than one kilt consider themselves lucky, so the more kilts being worn the better.
Kind Regards,
David.
