One thing I believe we can agree upon is that old and familiar is more Scots than new and shiny, so if you can buy "vintage" items on the cheap, you are being authentic.

Yours aye,
Thanks MacLL.
While some apparently don't agree about the vintage items, that is definitely my modus operandi. I often shop at second hand stores... and wait for sale days!
As for the tie, I'm leery of treading on anybody's symbolism, even if non-U.K. folk wouldn't know the difference. A bit of research might be required there on the green and black stripes, just to be sure! Can anyone confirm the universality of such a tie?

Don't forget that the differences in striped ties and regimental/university/club ties also are in the "layout" of the stripes; American ties see the stripe "go" from right to left, while the UK & Commonwealth patterns go from left to right.

Green and dark blue(supposed to be mauve) on the same proportions of the "Guards tie" would be the "Wimbledon" tie, aka "The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club".
Not all UK Regimental ties go from left to right, for example, the RAF, A&S Highlanders and the Royal Marines to name but three.

Does left-to-right mean left down to right? Or up?

Left down to right.
And CajunScot's advice is still good, as those "organizational" ties in the UK whose stripes descend from right to left tend to be the exception to the rule, so you're far safer going with an "American-style" tie than one with stripes running the other direction.
And a little research will often tell you if the colours and stripe direction of the tie are used by a particular organization.
And does anybody else think that an X-Marks regimental tie would be a nice addition to the wardrobe?

There was an effort several years ago to design and prodcue an Xmarks club tie, but it seems to have fizzled out...

Left up, right down(assume you are wearing the tie) is the usual way for UK ties of that style--------but not always.
Interestingly in the USA, the Universities(colleges?) of Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Pennsylvania, Princeton,Vanderbilt and Yale, all their respective ties go left(high) to right(low).
