Re: Where do wear like the lower edge of the kilt

After the rambel this past weekend in St. Paul, Mn. I would venture to say that based on my limited observations most of the gentlemen that were wearing kilts this weekend were just at or above the knee cap.

Truth be told, I made the adjustment on Sat. myself and will admit the lack of scrape on the back of my knees is appreciated.

I've got to agree with the others here and say the top of the knee cap to no lower than mid knee cap for myself. Crisp pleats iritating the back of my knees all day at a festival are no way to go my friends! Not to offend anyone here, but I personally think that it looks sloppy when the entire knee is covered by the edge of the kilt.

I wear mine a bit above the kneecap to start with. As a "gentleman of substance" my kilt starts out above the knee but it usually ends up somewhere in the kneecap area. I'm 5'11" but I have a 29 inch inseam so my kilts are all 21 1/2 to 22 inches. I like a shorter kilt.

Anything much below knee starts lon like a teeny bopper in a goth outfit to me.

You just answered a question for me! Being both a Gentleman of Substance and stump-legged myself, the usual numbers given for kilt lengths were not matching my measurements. Thanks.

Re: Where do wear like the lower edge of the kilt

I have one kilt that is mid-knee, one slightly higher and one at the top of the knee cap. I also have an Rkilt that hangs to the bottom of the knee cap (and for the style of the Rkilt, I think a longer look works well). On a cold winter day, I sure like the wool kilt at mid-knee! And while I know there are lots of opinions about that look, my sister says the mid-knee looks a little classier. Also, I don't mind the extra "coverage" that the mid-knee kilt gives me when I'm seated, especially if I'm on a platform. That being said, I like my box pleat at the top of the knee, too. It's more about what do I feel like on any given day. The third kilt by the way is just slightly below the top of the knee. So, I'm all over the map. Next kilt? Well I think I'd shoot for mid-to top of the knee. I personally like the hang and feel of a kilt that's in that category of length. It doesn't seem to bother the back of my leg and gives me just a little more protection in a colder clime.

I wish I knew you were going to be there!
I was there both days. Saturday in a Clan Strachan kilt and brown tweed jacket, and Sunday I was in the SAMS color guard carrying the Saltiare.

Re: Where do wear like the lower edge of the kilt

Being a newby at this kilt business, I've been reading this thread with a great deal of interest and have another related question for you all. I recently ordered a new Semi-trad from Rocky (a fine young man, by the way) and he called me with some concerns on the requested length that I had specified. The question then is this, knowing where I want the bottom is all well and good, but, where should the top then be? Rocky says about 2" above the navel. I sent him a picture of myself in my current kilt and he felt that it was a tad low at right at or slightly above the navel. I'm not very tall, so to bring it up that additional 1 or so seems awfully high. What do you all think? This is the first time I've posted a picture of myself on this site, by the way.

Re: Where do wear like the lower edge of the kilt

I have come to understand that a gentleman should wear the kilt where he feels comfortable. If you are ok with it around your navel then yes it is ok. I am all about comfort and simplicity. I am sure that this is not entirely proper but. I have been a kiltie for going on 8 years and seemed to be able to fit in just fine. Enjoy the freedom, enjoy the air!
