I have two of these brass cantles. The first was in very good condition and only required the light use of metal polish. The second was very green. It looked as if the copper content had oxidised in a couple of places and the brass was quite pitted. This required immersion in diluted vinegar over-night and then a toothbrush and toothpaste scrub before being polished with metal polish. The pitting remains but all the discolouration has been removed. I consider the pitting to be the marks of history which add to the character of the sporran.![Very Happy](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)
The pictures of the cantle on Ebay suggest that this one is in better condition.
Good luck creagdhubh

Yes, the character is definitely an attractive and invaluable aspect of the cantle! I would simply add a wee bit of polish, not too much, to give it a nice overall shine.
Thanks!

I didn't win the previous bid, the sporran became way too expensive for my tastes (also, I have another Kate Macpherson sporran on commission presently). However, thanks to the notification from a very kind Xmarker, I am currently in the process of becoming an exclusive member of the club!
Wish me luck,

Very nice, Kenneth. When and where did you acquire that fine specimen? Will it be ready for wear by the 2012 Kentucky Scottish Weekend I wonder?
Cheers,

Given that I intend this to be my only sporran purchase (with a few bag options, of course) I was free to outbid you for it. ![Wink](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)
The cantle is in very good shape, but does need a little attention. I am however unlikely to have a new bag for it by the Kentucky Scottish Weekend due to everything I have to do for the big event THIS weekend. Oh my, is KSW just a week and a half away? Perhaps by Glasgow.

Congratulations on the sporran win, Kenneth!
I suspected it would take a wee bit of time to get a new bag on there, which no doubt will look quite smart when finished. Awww yes...the annual "Run for the Roses!" The Kentucky Scottish Weekend is Saturday, May 12; however, Stephanie and I will not be attending. I am not sure if Sandy will be there again this year, but I do know that Mark Stephenson (XMTS member) will be there managing the Clan MacTavish tent.
Stephanie and I may attend the Glasgow games, yet our summer holiday to the Outer Banks and Camp Lejeune, NC (to visit old Marine Corps friends) will be just around the corner by then, and we may wish to save our pennies by foregoing the 4 hour drive south. I have heard good things in regards to Glasgow, but have yet to attend.
Cheers,

(Still need to build a sporran body for it, of course...)

In the short-term, why not use the original bag, well scrubbed in cold water, a light sandpapering when dry and a tassel to cover the holes?
