    While Steampunk always raises a smile and piques interest and a thumbs-up when spoken of, personal preference is for the, "more advanced but still simpler times" epitomized by the Dieselpunk "school of philosophy."

    What's Dieselpunk, one queries?

    Pretty much, anything 20th century, pre-transistors / solid state / computers
    * Indiana Jones
    * Cheap detectives ("The Maltese Falcon")
    * veritably anything World War II and immediate-after early Cold War
    * "Casablanca"
    * "High Road To China"
    * " Flight of the Phoenix" (original)
    * early black and white TV
    * early comic books and "True ____" rag magazines
    * Art Deco
    * Post-Impressionism & early modern art
    * jazz, early blues, swing, (original) country & western, early rock & roll
    * electric and electrical but not electronic
    * flathead V-8s, Harley WLAs, straight 8s, Packards, Hudsons, Studebakers, Crosleys, the first VW Beetles, cars with fins but no seat belts
    * airplanes with reciprocating engines and propellers and very early jets
    * pre-spaceflight but interest therein, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon
    * very early James Bond, e.g., Casino Royale, as written
    * flannel suits, fedoras, stockings with seams, dames, Zippo lighters
    * Daddy Warbucks and the Chrysler Building
    * very early Playboy magazine
    * "Citizen Kane," "North By Northwest"
    * Steinbeck, Mitchell, Hemingway, Forester, early Agatha Christie

    One can imagine a variety of well-accoutred, kilted gents interspersed therein, interacting with....

    I like most of the stuff in your dieselpunk list, but still prefer the Victorian clothing and authors like Charles Dickens, H G Wells and to a lesser extent Jules Vernes.

    Hi all,

    It's been awhile since I last posted. This thread piqued my interest, as I've been slowly putting together some Steampunk-ish attire over the past few years. Here's a picture that someone took of me with it at a sci-fi convention early last year (courtesy of https://www.facebook.com/VanderPhotography):

    It's probably only Steampunk-ish in that I tried to take something vaguely Victorian and add a pair of goggles onto it, although I've been thinking of trying to expand that a bit.

    Cheers!
