All this talk about the 80's. You must be a very young lot. I had knitted ties as a boy and I grew up in the 50's and early 60's. I didn't like them very much then because they stretched when making a knot and they had that square cut look at the bottom

Thank you Mr John Cash! I find myself periodically coming into fashion and going back out again simply by remaining exactly the same... anyway I digress.
I love knitted ties both wool and silk and have several of different colours. I love the extra layer of texture it adds to an outfit and I think it goes very well with all the wool, brushed cotton and tweed that makes up a typical highland wardrobe. That isn't to say that I don't like the silk as a contrast as well.
I actually don't think I've ever seen a pointed bottom knitted tie (I have seen and have woollen ties with a pointed bottom but not knitted ties). In any case I happen to like the flat bottom.
I have never had a problem with them stretching and I've had several makes (Gieves & Hawkes, Hiddich & Key, Jaeger and others I can't remember off hand). If you have a properly fitting shirt collar you don't have to tie too tightly to get a good knot: it doesn't have to hold your head on after all!
Eighties? I thought that was the red silk tie with white spots and matching pochette? Perhaps it explains why the entire office hums Aha's "Take On Me" when I'm walking past with my knitted ties!

Re: Knit neck ties?
I would indeed make very minor adjustments to Sandy's outfit, should I be wearing a day outfit. We are, surely, quite capable of adding our own variations on a theme, without looking too much different from the basic style and without looking like peas in a pod.
What I would say, is that anyone wanting advice on what to wear if going kilted to a funeral should look no further than this picture for guidance. I can assure everyone that this basic style is quite normal at a Highland funeral. And yes, the tie is perfectly acceptable.

I agree, Jock.
His outfit is "quite normal", the tie is "perfectly acceptable".
Were I to go to a Highland funeral my dress would be, too.
But it doesn't shout out 'terrific' (and neither would mine).

It does to me! I'm afraid you are not hearing what I am saying, it is the understated, effortless style and approach that makes Sandy's outfit 'terrific,' and that was my central theme throughout my post.
Cheers,

Jock, of course some might make "minor adjustments." Not a problem. We all have our own style and variations, but I always feel confident with my choices.

Knowing the basics of Highland attire is the foundation of having the confidence to make dress adjustments that our own personal flair demands.
It is something that you, me and others have been banging on about, for many a year.
