Yes, the book is quite dark as well. Very Old-World fairy-tale-esque. I will have to try out the movie.

I remember seeing Thomasina and reading the Paul Gallico book also.
I always thought of it more as a cat/spiritual movie than a Scottish one even though it is set in Scotland.
Of course Susan Hampshire who played the "witch" later went on to star in Monarch of the Glen - not a movie but a very Scottish TV series!

I greatly enjoyed Monarch of the Glen when it aired on PBS. Unfortunately I didn't see the whole series, but found it avaliable on blockbuster, thus its now in my queue!

In order of my favorite to least of which I have a recording:
Rob Roy (1995 - co-starring Finlay Currie);
Tunes of Glory - (Co-starring Finlay Currie);
Local Hero (The Hero is a MacIntyre from Houston, so what can I say);
The Wicker Man (1973; The 2007 version sucked);
I Know Where I'm Going - (co-starring Finlay Currie);
Whisky Galore - (Co-starring Finlay Currie);
Kidnapped (1995 - Co-starring Finlay Currie);
Kidnapped (1971 - Co-starring Finlay Currie);
Rob Roy, The Highland Rogue (1953 - co-starring Finlay Currie)
Kidnapped (Disney 1960 - one of Peter O'Tool's first films; co-starring Finlay Currie);
The Flying Scotsman (co-starring Finlay Currie);
Braveheart (co-starring Finlay Currie);
(BTW, I only have Chasing the Deer on VHS)

I'm a little surprised by these references to appearances by Finlay Currie between 1971 and 1995 - he died in 1968.
