Hobnails... for when you absolutely, positively have to ski across any remotely smooth surface.

Thats why they last forever, they are too dangerous to wear.

Well, if the heel cleats on my ghillie brogues were any indication, metal bits on one's shoes tend to wear out pretty quickly.

I had a pair that I put a zipper in when I was a paramedic. Recently bought another pair (they come with zippers installed in them already) specifically to wear with my kilts.

You can also get zippers that lace in to the front of the boots, so instead of lacing them up they just zip/unzip.

Original SWAT are the pair I just got. They have a nice long zipper that goes all the way down, making them easier to manage.

My Raichle hiking boots. Hose up and self tied garters. I'm a traditional kilt wearer, and the scrunched hose just don't feel right to me, although I know many of you lads do it that way.

Mel,
I like my Timberland Alpine hiking boots. They are rugged and very comfortable; quite suited to the hiking/climbing that I do.
Also, I prefer wearing my hose more traditionally as opposed to scrunched. When hiking, I carry a very sharp, 6" Sgian Dubh and a snake bite kit in my sporran.

Simon Fraser fought as MacShimidh, a Highland chief… wrapped and belted in a plaid over the top of his linen shirt, like his ordinary kinsmen. He put a bonnet on his head, and stuck the Fraser emblem, a sprig of yew, in it. With the battle cry, A'Chaisteal Dhunaidh and the scream of the pipes, they charged to battle. My vote is for brogue boots, either wing-tipped or cap-toe. If you care to go the Cheap Bastard route, head for the nearest H&M store (or their webstore) and consider these:

I think I will go to an H&M store this week and see if they have any. Those look nice and affordable.
