Jock Scot - I think we "Colonists" may have a different definition for "sport coat". We call a "sport coat" a tailored jacket (like a navy blazer or Harris Tweed) that is worn without matching slacks, and would be the work horse of a man's wardrobe. Meaning, that it spans the gap b/t semi-casual business attire, right up to (but not quite) semi-formal. I think the comparison would be:Tweed argyll/kilt/day sporran and navy blazer, khaki slacks, weejuns.
As for the poll, I think a smart choice for an all around jacket would be a dark grey tweed. It would suit at all but the most formal occasions. Get a matching waistcoat (vest, fer Yanks) if yer in a colder climate.
As for the tartan tie........ me GRANDFATHER wears one, but ........

Your decription of a sports coat is perfect! We do call a blazer a blazer though. I am at risk of being boring now,BUT the tweed Argyll/kilt/ day sporran ensamble that you describe is regarded here as equivalent to a SUIT.The tartan tie thing is really just a bit of fun, although it seems that you "colonials",no offence meant, wear tartan ties more often than we do.

Jake,
Here is my G (T) Braemar jacket from the Pleasanton Games, all I can say is that Great Minds think alike (or is that Fools Flock together? )
I like having something I could wear to a wedding or dressy dinner out (with a certain gorgeous red head who shall remain nameless). I think that the semi-dress sporran works with this outfit. I have dressed the sporran down a notch by using a leather belt instead of a chain. I would feel comforatble switching out the dress shirt for a tux shirt, the tie for a bow tie, and the leather sporran belt wth a chain belt to take this outfit to semi-formal wear (perhaps the hose would need to be switched as well, hmmm.
Cheers
Jamie

"advanced years" You jest sir, you are youthful, hale, and hearty ...gosh for your prattling on you would think that you were some old fellow like Freelander Sporrano who can't read this text making fun of him because it's far too small for his old eyes to read. Hahahahahahahahahahahaha! Anyway, I thought you looked quite stylish in your new Braemar, but then again it might have just been the company!
Cheers

Panache,
I would like to see a review of your pv kilt jacket, if you have the time to write one. PV sounds like a better material than wool for us southern kilt wearers.

Here's another kilter - me! In a generic tweed jacket conversion.
I find that the grey scales of tweed tend to go with damn near anything.
Let's see what else would/should be mentioned?
USMC tartan kilt and tie, brown docksider shoes, brown belt, bronze Marine buckle, black balmoral and black SWK nylon sporran, light blue shirt, cream hose and USMC flashes.......

It seems to me to be lighter than my wool kilt jackets (crail tweed, and black PC). While modelling it for the picture above I accidently spilled my drink on it and i t seems that the material is very stain resistant (the spill wiped off easily). The fit and workmanship are good. The front two outside pockets are functional. In addition there are two inner pockets and a breast pocket. The diamond buttons are a handsome antique silver rather than bright metal. I haven't had an occasion yet to wear it out and about but it seems very comfortable.
Perhaps Jake would offer his thoughts from his field test?
Cheers
Jamie
