I think he was one of those actors that you expect to see in anything remotely Scottish. 
Bit he was also more versatile - his classic portrayal of Magwitch in David Lean's Great Expectations for example.

Hmmm, favorite Scottish film would have to be The Water Horse. Ok, Im a dork but I took my son to it and he loved it and laughed alot and I love to hear him laugh. So that is now my favorite. I'm sentimental....
