Great job so far on the size 12's String...and I like the color too, one of my fav's! Do you have a pattern in the leg or cuff or will they be plain kilt hose?
Also Sydnie, your Granny is a very good knitter I see! Lovely yarn as well-they're nicely knitted!! Toirneach is a really nice pattern!

Make that my Mother Yes, I'm THAT old
She doesn't knit much anymore but produced sweaters and socks and the like for many years. I pressed her into this duty, something to break up the routine of doing crosswords and playing solitaire on the computer! I'll pass along your compliments, thank you!
The yarn is from Joanne's, much the nicest they offered in 4-ply worsted.

They will have a cable up the leg and the tops will be all fancy-pants as well.

Well done, ladies all!
Thistlelass, the 2 socks on 2 circulars method is pretty intuitive (to me). I believe that's what String is showing us in a toe-up fashion. Starting a toe-up sock is on my list of things to learn.
Here are 2 cuff-down projects at an early stage. One simply knits across a "row" --- taking great care to switch working yarn when you hit the second sock --- and you've done half a round on each sock. Turn over, knit across, and you've got a round.

I did 2 practice pieces and my first pair on DPNs. That went fine, but for a novice doing the second sock as an exact duplicate was rather daunting. I started my second pair separately (but simultaneously) on 2 circulars, then experimented on 2 together as I worked down the leg. Now I have Antje Gillingham's book, but I began by just doing it.

I have never knit socks, only dishrags for my wife and a balaclav several years ago. My mom taught me to knit as a teenager when I couldn't afford the wool balaclav that I was itching (no pun intended) for at a local backpacking supply store. (Now you know where my handle comes from.)
I have played with knitting the dishrags in various patterns so I believe that I could handle kilt hose patterns. But things like arches and gussets bewilder me. Also, like Fluter, the idea of making a duplicate is daunting to me. The idea of knitting two at a time makes great sense to me, but the directions I have read didn't make sense until I saw Fluter's pics.
Please keep posting the pics and as I run into further questions I know who/where to ask.
Thanks.

Everyone says it is, I just haven't given it a try because, for some reason, it seems a little daunting at the moment...or I am just very comfortable with my DPN's! LOL I am determined to learn though and I'm sure, once I do, I won't go back to DPN's for stockings and hose! When I run into problems, I'll know who to ask!! Thanks for showing your work. I really like the black and red diced ones!! Thanks for the link to the book as well....I'm ordering it along with Folk Socks-which has a really neat pair of kilt hose in it!!

If you can knit, purl, read a pattern and kit to gauge, you can knit kilt hose!! Give it a try and I'm sure one of us will be able to help if you run into any snags!

I'm halfway through the heel on this one, then they might be on hold till I have more measurements to go on. I do a simple short row heel but I'm also considering trying out a reverse flap heel for future pairs.
