So we have become pseudo regulars.
One Saturday we were out and about doing some shopping and decided that we had earned a cold beer. I was kilted in my Stillwater Saffron kilt, looking smashing as always, when my wife decided that we would go to Colors, the aforementioned bar. Little did we know that it was Female Impersonator Nite, or whatever they call it.
I walked through the front door to find myself literally "in the spotlight", and the emcee, a 6'5" monster of a man dressed up as woman, decided that I would be good fodder for the crowd. The next 5 minutes are a complete blur, fortunately he/she didn't do a kilt check despite the pleas from the crowd.
All in all it turned out to be a fun nite, but Whew, I'm sure I don't want to repeat that experience.

Probably just as well that you didn't.

I thank all of you for sharing your stories. I have yet to venture out in public wearing my kilt, as I type this, I am wearing my casual kilt from USA Kilts in the Tara tartan. It's not that I fear wearing out, it that I really have not had the opportunity yet. I am sure this small town with it's deep German roots will not have much to say to me, since I could really care less anyones opinion about my style of attire.
I will say my girlfriend who is Mexican has no problem with me wearing it, as long as I do not go "regimental" that due to a previous encounter at some public event a young man was wearing a kilt and to say it bluntly... He was not sitting very lady like.. She saw more than she wanted and as she put it.. My bits are for her eyes only...LOL
I am going to Bryan/College Station tomorrow for work, and I will be there through the week. I might have to wear the kilt for the Aggies (B/CS is home to Texas A&M). I just want to wear it properly even of it's casual.

The most difficult for me was at the Monterey Airport waiting on HH6 to return from her Afghanistan deployment. Brandon and I decided that was the best time to wear our kilts that we had got while she was away. Of course, after all of the doubting and worrying about her reaction, she didn't even blink an eye - till she saw the bill.

I know people won't want to hear this, but really, in Ireland. A majority were good compliments, but I got more "but you're AMERICAN!" there than anyplace else I've been.

Actually, the one time I got a real strong "reaction" it was an actual skirt.
A bunch of us signed up for one of those bowling fundraisers and we noticed that there was a clause to the effect that if a "team" had a "cheerleader" then the establishment would match their fundraising up to a point. So we discussed who was gonna dress up like the cheerleader. I agreed. At the time I owned a sewing machine with a pleater, so we whipped up a fast skirt, I found a wig, borrowed a set of clipon earrings, and swiped one of the other guys' daughter's pompoms.
I have to say I have no shame. As it happened, we were the only team with a cheerleader, so we got lots of attention, too. Once it was over, I stepped into the men's room to change back into jeans and surprised a group of Hispanic guys who were just finishing up. They left crossing themselves and muttering in Spanish.
With a kilt, I just wear it. I'm pretty casual and so are most people. I get more looks in the winter, because people think I must be freezing. In the summer I often wear a UK with a t-shirt that says, "Cleverly Disguised as a Responsible Adult." In my part of Canada there are a LOT of kilts of all kinds and people wear them regularly.
The first time for me was visiting my father on his deathbed. He looked me over and asked when I was going to get a "real" kilt in the family tartan.

For my first (timid) trip, it was to the local corner shop (convenience store) to get milk as I had run out. The Mrs, who first of all wasn't so keen on me wearing my kilt (casual black kilt from Heritage of Scotland ), ribbed me saying 'you're not going to wear that thing outside, are you?' I just put on a pair of boots, coat, and walked outside as if I were in jeans... I had a couple of looks but nothing said. There was a queue, but I noticed one girl checking me out...
Walked back indoors as if nothing had happened. I did have to psych myself up first, as my area isn't so used to kilts...
